In the RIEGGER standard, the individual grain size classes
(grain size dispersion) are graduated from coarse to fine
so that the diamond grain size optimal for the work sequence
at hand is always available. One of these grain sizes is always
the most economical choice and just barely capable of achieving
the required surface finish.
If polishing carriers made of the same material are used
in different machining steps, a roughly 5:1 leap in grain
size is possible from one process step to the next.
Example: Process step
A with 60µm, B with 15µm and C with 3µm.
When changing from a hard polishing carrier material for
premachining (e.g. steel) to a soft polishing carrier material
for fine polishing (e.g. felt) the leap in grain size is limited
to 3:1.
Example: Process step
A (steel) with15µm -> Process step B (felt cloth)
with 6µm.
